SQL Server 2019 represents the most intelligent SQL Server release to date. The Intelligent Query Processing suite — including batch mode on rowstore, table variable deferred compilation, scalar UDF inlining, and adaptive joins — delivers an average 30% performance improvement on mixed workloads without requiring any application code changes.
Accelerated Database Recovery (ADR) fundamentally reimagines crash recovery. Using a persistent version store, ADR ensures that recovery completes in constant time — seconds, not hours — regardless of the number or size of active transactions.
Data virtualization through PolyBase V2 connects SQL Server to the broader data ecosystem. Query Oracle, Teradata, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, CosmosDB, and cloud object storage directly from T-SQL using external tables.
SQL Server 2019 also strengthened security with secure enclaves for Always Encrypted, certificate management improvements, and enhanced auditing. UTF-8 support reduces storage for international data.
