Why Privacy Settings Matter
Windows 11 collects various types of data by default. This guide helps you understand and control exactly what Microsoft can access.
Diagnostic Data
Navigate to Settings → Privacy & Security → Diagnostics & Feedback.
- Required diagnostic data — Basic device info and error reports (cannot be fully disabled)
- Optional diagnostic data — Browsing history, app usage, device activity → Turn this OFF
- Improve inking and typing → Turn OFF (sends typing patterns to Microsoft)
Activity History
Settings → Privacy & Security → Activity History
- Uncheck "Store my activity history on this device"
- Click "Clear activity history"
Location Services
Settings → Privacy & Security → Location
Turn off location access for apps that don't need it. Keep it enabled only for Maps and Weather if needed.
Camera & Microphone
Review which apps have access to your camera and microphone under Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera/Microphone.
Advertising ID
Settings → Privacy & Security → General
- Turn OFF "Let apps show me personalized ads"
- Turn OFF "Let websites show me locally relevant content"
