Office Activation Issues
If Microsoft Office shows "Unlicensed Product" or won't accept your key, follow these steps.
Step 1: Verify Your Product Key
Double-check your 25-character key. Common mistakes:
- Confusing 0 (zero) with O (letter)
- Confusing 1 (one) with I (letter) or l (lowercase L)
- Missing or extra characters
Step 2: Check for Existing Activations
If you see "This key has already been used," a previous Office installation may be using the license.
Fix: Sign into your Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com → Services & subscriptions → Check installed devices.
Step 3: Remove Old Office Installations
Multiple Office versions can conflict. Use the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA) tool:
- Download SaRA from Microsoft
- Run it and select "Office"
- Choose "I have Office installed but can't activate it"
- Follow the automated repair steps
Step 4: Command Line Repair
For Office 2021/2024 (Click-to-Run):
Open Command Prompt as admin and run:
cd "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun"
OfficeC2RClient.exe /update user
Step 5: Online Activation
If automatic activation fails, try phone activation:
- Open any Office app
- Go to File → Account → Activate Product
- Select "I want to activate by phone"
- Call the number provided and follow the automated system
Quick Fix
Most Office activation issues are resolved by simply signing out of your Microsoft account in the Office app, restarting the app, and signing back in.
